“…COMES OUT AT night,” he said.

“A restriction we will soon remove.” Yeshe’s voice.

Will opened his eyes. As usual, he lay on the Bed of Awakening in the House of Four Doors. And, as usual, he wore the costume of the Rider.

But usual ended there.

He found neither Brian nor any other Doogle waiting for him. Instead, hands folded before him and wearing his red robes, Yeshe stood beside one of the doors.

Will blinked. Correction—Yeshe stood beside the only door.

Tonight, the House resembled the dark bricked square where he’d encountered the Mara. And Marell. He shivered at those memories. Fastening his hooded cloak around his neck, he walked over. “Can’t say I like what you’ve done with the place.”

Yeshe raised an eyebrow. “I have done nothing. This room manifests your subconscious, applying the visual metaphors you use in Dream.”

“Meaning the House is reflecting my thoughts and…” His words trailed off. And fears, meaning Marell. “And only one door? Am I telling myself I’m running out of options?”

Yeshe smiled. “Perhaps a more positive view—that you have now chosen which path to follow.”

Or I only have one path left. To kill Marell, whether or not I want to. But he didn’t voice that fear. “So where do we start?”

“You must learn to track a dream element back to the person who is dreaming it. Back to the doorway where they themselves entered Dream. Learn to step through that doorway, and your astral spirit will enter the waking world.”

Will again imagined his astral form strolling the streets alongside Case. “Okay, so let’s roll.”

“There is more. You will enter the waking world in the place where the dreamer is sleeping.”

“We can find people in the real world by tracking them back from their dreams? Cool.” He considered that. “Oh wow. We can find where Marell is. And the missing kids.” He stopped. “Oh wait. That means we’d have to face Marell or the Hollow Boys in Dream. Not high on my list.”

“Nor on mine. But we can locate the hospital more safely. If you again find the young Fader in Dream, we can track his dream back to where he is a prisoner.” Yeshe turned towards the single door in the House.

“Oops. Forgot to tell you. Fader escaped from that place. He showed up here about dinnertime, asking for Case.”

The monk spun around. “What did you say?”

“Uh…Fader escaped. He’s here.”

Rushing forward, Yeshe grabbed Will, his eyes wide. “Young master, you must wake up. We are in danger. It is a trap!”
